BLEPHARITIS

Blepharitis is a very common condition that affects the eyelids.  It occurs when the tiny oil glands of the inner eyelid become inflamed.  Symptoms include sore, red, itchy eyelids that may look greasy and crusted. Dry eyes also are a symptom.

Blepharitis can be caused by excess dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows or bacteria commonly found on the face and lids.  As a result, an infection may occur. Treatment involves keeping the surface area clean to open up the glands.  In some cases involving bacterial infection, the doctor will prescribe an antibiotic or steroid eye drops as well as treat the underlying conditions.
